Wow…I had a notably remarkable moment of my life today. I was able to meet one of the most famous men in the entire world while flying from DFW to Dulles International. Buzz Aldrin, the second man on the moon, whose remarkable journey to the moon has influenced the course of history completely. Let me paint this picture for you, I went up to my gate where it’s pretty unusual to see 4 giddy pilots with huge smiles and amaze written all over their faces at the front gate, speaking to a man who was humbly sitting in a wheelchair waiting to embark the aircraft.
That sight already peaked my interest, but I was coincidentally next to them so overheard them speaking about “floating around” somewhere, and how this man was a pilot in the military and some missions to here and there. I was thinking, am I dreaming or are they speaking about space exploration? Then I heard one of the airport assistance men saying, “Ok, we need to get Buzz ready to board.” It was pretty early and I didn’t go to sleep the night before: I purposely stay up the night before Europe most of the time, and spend the night packing and cleaning so I’m able to sleep on the plane to shock my body clock from an America time zone to a European time zone, it works (for me at least)!
So needless to say, I was still in a heavy sleepy stupor. When Buzz finally gazed at me, I was thrown into a befuddled state, trying to put two-and-two together and string a proper sentence together. It’s really funny now that I think about it because it’s pretty rare for me to be at a loss for words…everyone who knows me knows I have a lot to speak about, pretty much on any subject lol.
Having been able to stop my loss for words, I finally said, “Excuse me, did they say Buzz, as in Buzz Aldrin, sir?” I mean how many people are named Buzz, thus my interest in history compelled me to ask him. He said, “Yes, ma’am.” The pilot also made an announcement later aboard the aircraft and apologetically said, “I’m sorry, this may be embarrassing for you, Buzz, but we want you all to know there is history aboard this aircraft today! Buzz Alrdin, the second man to ever walk on the moon, is flying with us today. Thank you for your service sir and I’m sure we can all say that we appreciate your attribution to history and mankind.” He something to this effect, it’s hard to remember specifics but I recall everyone in the aircraft looking around for him shocked and admirable at the same time.
I still think of the little conversation we had, and thanking him for his contribution to history. He was a humbly sitting down and I didn’t want to bother him that much, so shortly after speaking with him, I let him be. I will have this moment in my life forever. It’s not everyday you get to speak with a moon walker, and the 2nd one on at that, on the 1st moon mission, ever. I’m still a little history-struck.
If I didn’t know who the 2nd man on the moon was, I wouldn’t have even known it before everyone else knew it, and might not have been able to have that short but sweet convo with him. I find it very enlightening to be as well-rounded as possible. It can and will be very impressive and relevant to many things in your future; perhaps to the client you are trying to land, or to impress your next, or on a business trip when you are trying to make a good impression for your company, or simply interesting for you because you are given the opportunity to get engaged with and meet some amazing people in your travels that you might have never had the chance to meet had you not known a single thing in their subject matter.
You have a chance to be on a similar level with a wide range of people. For example in my travels I constantly speak with people about subjects such as languages, different cultures, Formula 1, Valdobbiadene, The Rhone River Valley, Valentino Rossi, Angela Merkel, Trump, ADE, Black Coffee, Via Sempione, Dalt Villa, Via Del Corso, Messi, Ronaldo and Neymar, Where to go in: London, Ibiza, Spain, Holland, Belgium, Greece, Italy, etc, and even Andre Chiang and his Singaporean 2-star Michelin star restaurant which he’s sadly closing February 18, 2018. I read a lot of news and current events and learn about many places before, during, and even after visiting, soak in as much as possible!
People say, “Knowledge is Power.” I could agree that without knowing all of the things I do, I wouldn’t be where I am right now, but I’m still learning and am proud of that. It’s incredibly important for growth, if you are the same as you were 10 years ago, there’s definitely growth needing to be done. You have no idea how many people abroad and at home you will have the opportunity to speak with about topics such as these. So learn as much as possible about different people, cultures, and history especially through other peoples eyes, to understand on their level even if you do not agree with certain opinions, it’s important to know how to be understanding to others so your mind can think in ALL directions and make you a smarter traveler and smarter/more understanding person in general.
The more you learn about others, the more versed in human communication and human understanding you will be. Life is all about human understanding and communication, is it not? Not matter what field or industry you are in, the basic points come to these in my opinion. How does one learn about culture exactly? The easiest way to learn about culture is through food, local beverages, the experiences you have, the people you speak with, don’t be afraid to ask questions even if they seem taboo! This in turn really helps you learn about your own culture as you learn about others, as I’ve stated before.
Speaking of culture, I’m about to be in a bit of a culture shock myself. Je n’ai pas parlé français I( haven’t spoken French) in AGES! I always need a day or two to accustom my brain to hearing another language, so here’s to my French! I just landed in Geneva, en route to Dijon, France. J’ai froid! (I’m cold.) It’s a bit chilly, but at least brisk and fresh. Can’t wait for the rest of my journey if this is at the very start it is already starting to look like a life changing experience, yet again! Cheers to the beginning of my DECADE ANNIVERSARY of European Travels! Yes, Every year since 2007! <3 A dream come true and lessons well learned! <3 ALLEZ!!
